For an upcoming @redlodgeclaycenter group exhibiti For an upcoming @redlodgeclaycenter group exhibition, I wanted to try to make my "Painted" series of high-fire reduction celadon work in mid-fire oxidation.  This locally-reduced Silicon Carbide (SiC) Bristol Celadon glaze isn't perfect.  Some have slight areas of carbon trapping on the interiors, and I didn't have time to completely resolve the bubbles.  But I'm happy to have gotten some work out in time for the show. Glazy Series:  Volumetric Blending Basics Popul Glazy Series:  Volumetric Blending Basics Popularized by Ian Currie, Volumetric Blending is an easy way to create blends between two or more recipes.  We can blend anything- glaze recipes, clay bodies, even smoothies and bread dough. Starting with equal recipe batch weights (for example, 100 grams), mix/sieve each batch and then add water until all batches have the same volume.  Now blends between recipes can be made using volume. These celadons are not "fake".   The colors in These celadons are not "fake".   The colors in these glazes are all produced by iron, from yellow to green to green-blue, from oxidation to reduction.  But they were all fired in the same kiln, using a simple oxidation cone 6 firing program with no special firing or cooling schedule.  The only variables were the addition of silicon carbide (SiC) and zinc oxide. Why did "Clear N Base" work so well?  (Updated) Why did "Clear N Base" work so well?  (Updated) Following up on the last two posts about SiC reduced celadons in cone 6 oxidation:  Given the success of "Clear N Base" and @potterbenstudio's wonderful work, I tested the hypothesis in the "failed" test glazes, substituting 0.15 CaO with approximately 0.15 ZnO.  This test was successful and shows the role of Zinc in clearing carbon-trapping. #craft #glaze #glazes #glazerecipes #glazetest #ceramics #pottery #ceramicglazes #glazechemistry #glazechem #glazecalc #umf #glazy
